Food and hospitality work is a common part-time route for students in Finland. Evening and weekend shifts fit around lectures, and many jobs need no earlier experience. The one thing to plan is the hygiene passport.
When a student job needs it
The passport is required once you have handled unpackaged, easily perishable food in a food premises for at least three months. You can work up to three months in those tasks without one. Sealed products do not count. A shift at a till or shelf-stocking with packaged goods is not handling unpackaged food.
Common student food jobs
- Cafés and restaurants: kitchen assistants, prep work and anyone who plates food
- Catering and event staff
- Deli, bakery and food counters in shops
- Food trucks and festival stalls
- Seasonal work at summer sites, ski resorts and Christmas markets
Each of these can bring you to three months of food handling.
Short jobs add up
Students often combine short jobs, and separate short periods are added together toward the three months. A summer at a kiosk plus a Christmas job plus a spring café shift can get you to the limit. See part-time and seasonal work.
Why get it before applying
Employers may ask applicants for the passport before hiring, even though the law does not require it until three months of the work have passed. A candidate who already has it is ready to start. The passport is valid until further notice, so it does not expire between semesters, and it is personal, so it is not tied to one employer.
What the test takes
The test is 40 true/false statements, taken on paper in person, and you need 34 correct answers. Training is not mandatory, so preparing can be as simple as reading the lessons and practising with the free quiz. The test can be taken in Finnish, Swedish or English. Jobs where you do not need it
Any job that never involves handling unpackaged easily perishable food does not fall under the rule. If you are unsure about a task, ask the employer, who is responsible for making sure that everyone who needs a passport has one.
Plan around the season
Seasonal jobs cluster around summer and Christmas. Get the passport before the season starts so it is not the reason you miss a shift.
