The hygiene passport is one test and one passport, and after that there are no renewal costs. The exact fee is set by the tester, so check it when you book.

Who sets the fee

The hygiene passport is issued only by a tester approved by Ruokavirasto. The tester may charge a fee for the test and for issuing the passport. The fee is not the same everywhere, so compare testers before you book. Look for what is included.

What you are paying for

The fee is for sitting the test and receiving the passport. Training before the test is not mandatory, so preparing does not have to cost anything beyond your time. The lessons and free quiz on PassiPRO are one way to prepare.

No renewal costs

The passport is valid until further notice. There is no renewal fee and no retest cycle. If you change employers, the same passport keeps working.

If an employer pays

Some employers pay for the test. Ask before you book if a job is conditional on it. The passport is personal, regardless of who paid for the test and the passport. If the employer covers it, the passport is still yours and goes with you when you leave.

If you do not pass

A new attempt is a new test, so the tester's fee may apply again. That is a good reason to prepare well before the first sitting. You have 45 minutes for 40 true/false statements and need 34 correct. See what to expect from the test.

A test taker who fails may ask for correction only for a checking error or an error in a test statement. Missing the pass mark by a point is not grounds for one.

Is it worth getting early?

Since the passport does not expire, paying for it once before you need it is no more expensive than paying later. It also means you are not looking for a test slot under time pressure. Employers may ask for the passport before hiring, even though the law does not require it until three months of such work have passed.

Before you book

Ask the tester what the fee covers, what identification to bring (an original, valid photo ID) and when you will get the result. The tester must tell you at the latest one month after the test.
