Hygieniapassi Test Difficulty: What to Expect

40 true/false statements, 34 correct to pass, 45 minutes, on paper. How hard the hygiene passport test is and how to prepare for it.

The hygiene passport test is short and has a simple format, but the pass mark is high. Here is what to expect.

The format

  • 40 true/false statements
  • 34 correct answers needed to pass, which is 85 percent, so up to six mistakes are allowed
  • 45 minutes, and you may not leave earlier than 20 minutes after the start
  • Done on paper, on Ruokavirasto's test form, in a supervised test room
  • Available in Finnish, Swedish or English

A blank or unclear answer counts as wrong, but wrong answers do not give negative points. So answer every statement.

Why 85 percent feels harder than it sounds

With true/false statements there is no obvious wrong option to rule out. Every statement is either right or wrong, and many turn on one detail: a temperature, a number of hours, whether something is allowed or not. Minced meat must be stored at a maximum of +4 °C, while perishable milk and cream may go up to +6 °C. A statement that swaps one number for the other is false.

What the statements cover

The test covers the whole syllabus for food work:

  • microbes and how they cause harm
  • food poisoning and how to prevent it
  • storage temperatures, heating and cooling
  • preventing contamination after heating
  • work clothing and personal hygiene
  • the hygiene rules of the law for food work
  • cleaning and waste
  • own-check and hazard control
  • food law and the authorities

Do you need training first?

Training before the test is not mandatory. You still need to know the material. Reading the lessons and practising with true/false statements is the most direct preparation, because that is the exact format you will be asked in.

Rules on test day

  • Bring an original, valid photo ID. The tester checks your identity from it.
  • Write your full name and Finnish personal ID number (or date of birth if you have none) on the form.
  • Mark answers with a ballpoint pen that is not black, or a similar tool. Pencil is not allowed.
  • A phone counts as cheating. If a test taker cheats or tries to, the test is not assessed and is failed.

Results

The tester must tell you the result at the latest one month after the test. If you fail, you can ask for a correction only for a checking error or an error in a test statement. Being a point or two short is not grounds for a correction.
